It is the sheer plenitude of nature understood in order to destroy it in turn. “He tasks me, he heaps me”—it may be all pasteboard at the end of the road, but knowing it is nothing, is enough. Both totality and nothingness would suffice as long as there is an ultimate answer. For Melville, the whiteness is the fear of a white page, of lost potential, of nothing left.
